Planning a trip to or from Aguascalientes and not sure whether to bring your dog or cat along — or leave them in good hands? Both options can work; the key is planning ahead and being honest about what your pet actually enjoys and tolerates. At Madagascar Pet Hotel we've spent more than 30 years helping families (and visitors) in Aguascalientes make this call, and here's what matters most.
What do you need to fly with your pet?
To fly with your pet within Mexico you need, at minimum, to meet your airline's rules: a carrier that fits the airline's size requirements, up-to-date vaccinations, and in many cases a recent health certificate signed by a veterinarian. Every airline sets its own weight limits, fees, and rules on whether pets fly in the cabin or as checked cargo — so check the specific requirements as soon as you book your flight. If you're flying internationally into Mexico, also review SENASICA's current import guidance before you travel.
A few tips from our veterinary team for flight day:
- Get your pet used to the carrier weeks in advance, not the day of the flight.
- Don't overfeed right before flying; a light meal a few hours earlier is better.
- Never sedate your pet without explicit instructions from your vet: at cruising altitude, sedatives can be risky, especially for brachycephalic (flat-nosed) breeds.
How do you road-trip with a dog or cat?
On the road, the essentials are secure restraint, stops every 2–3 hours, and water on hand. A loose pet in the car is a risk for everyone; use a well-secured carrier or a harness with a seatbelt attachment.
To keep the trip smooth:
- Plan stops so your dog can stretch, drink, and relieve themselves.
- Never leave your pet alone in a parked car, not even "for 5 minutes" — interior temperatures climb fast.
- Pack their regular food for the entire trip: switching kibble mid-journey usually ends in digestive upset.
- For cats, partially cover the carrier with a blanket; it cuts down on visual stress.
When is boarding the better choice?
Boarding is the better choice when your destination or itinerary isn't pet-friendly: hotels that don't accept animals, activity-packed days where your pet would spend hours alone, extreme weather, or very long travel legs. A trip that feels like rest to you can be a sequence of strange environments and long waits for your dog or cat.
In those cases, boarding is the kinder option: from $286 MXN per night, your pet stays in a private cage-free suite with three meals a day, supervised walks, and 24/7 veterinary supervision. You receive photos and videos via WhatsApp every day, so you both actually enjoy the vacation. See the details of our dog boarding in Aguascalientes or browse all our services.
For cats — who usually suffer more from a change of environment than from their humans' absence — we have an exclusive feline area, 100% separated from dogs, complete with a solarium.
What is TaxiPet and how does it make travel easier?
TaxiPet is our door-to-door pet transport service covering Aguascalientes city and its metropolitan area. If your flight leaves early or you land late, there's no juggling required: we pick your pet up at your home before your trip and bring them back when you return.
How it works:
- Specially equipped vehicles for pet transport, with no species mixing in the same trip.
- Driver certified in animal handling.
- Coverage across Aguascalientes city and nearby municipalities including Jesús María, San Francisco de los Romo, Pabellón de Arteaga, Rincón de Romos, and Asientos.
- Personalized quote based on distance; also available for veterinary appointments.
It pairs especially well with hotel check-in (2:00 PM) and check-out (11:00 AM): you focus on your flight, we handle the furry logistics.
Visiting Aguascalientes with your pet?
If you're coming to Aguascalientes — for the San Marcos Fair, for work, or to visit family — and your accommodation doesn't accept pets, we can host your dog or cat for single nights or your entire stay. Many of our guests are pets of visitors from other Mexican states and abroad. All you need is their vaccination record (rabies, the combination/DHPP vaccine, and Bordetella for dogs) and deworming applied within the last 3 months.
We have two convenient locations: in Colonia Héroes (north side) and Jardines del Sol (south side), open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Our team can coordinate with you via WhatsApp in English or Spanish.
What does our veterinary team recommend before any trip?
Whether it's a flight, a road trip, or a boarding stay, the same baseline preparation always applies: a vet visit a few weeks before travel to confirm your pet is healthy, with current vaccinations and deworming.
Also, before you leave:
- Check that their ID tag has an up-to-date phone number and, if they're microchipped, that the registry information is correct.
- Keep a recent photo of your pet on your phone — it's the first thing you'll need if they ever get lost somewhere unfamiliar.
- Write down your regular vet's contact information; if your pet has a medical condition, carry (or leave with us) their history and prescription in writing.
- Keep feeding times as stable as possible while traveling: routine is the best natural calming aid there is.
Plan ahead and travel relaxed
Traveling with your pet can be a great experience if you prepare for it — and leaving them in good hands can be the best gift when the plan isn't built for them. Whatever you decide, decide weeks ahead: airline requirements take time, and in high season boarding spots are reserved 2 to 4 weeks in advance.
